Californian massage, our essence
The origin of the Californian Massage
This type of massage was born in the Esalen Institute (Big Sur, California) in the sixties. This was a community founded by people with a very diverse background, most of them after having spent long periods of time in places like India, Thailand, Tibet, etc. This community is still alive today and out of it have come such interesting things as Californian massage, Rolfing massage, Gabriel Roth’s five rhythms, a powerful school of yoga, etc., not to mention that it was the birthplace of Gestalt.
All these disciplines have common roots and share the same essence.
Californian massage was born as a mixture of massage techniques with origins in Ayurveda, Thai, Hawaiian massage, visceral mobilization, harmonic hammocks, cranial sacral therapy, Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, trigger points, etc. In which the priority is to understand the person as a whole. It is a holistic massage.
In the 90’s Ingrid May and Marcelo Bartroli brought Esalen Massage to Buenos Aires. Little by little a deep interest was generated in those who were experiencing it. There, Esalen Massage took the name of Californian Massage. Its development and teaching took place in Oasis, the school they founded in Argentina.
Through our school you will have the opportunity to get certified in Esalen Massage.
The next Certification will be in Portugal in August 2022.
What is Californian Massage?
Californian Massage is the integration of different techniques to be used in a holistic and healing way. Active meditation, sensitivity and connection are fundamental pillars in the sessions.
Long, flowing movements subtly envelop the entire body. Energy is mobilized to allow for the release of old memories. The connection and care of the therapist allow healing to emerge where personal processes have a safe and intimate space to manifest.
During a session you will be able to feel the present and loving contact where stretching, twisting, deep and soothing touches are mixed.
The rhythmic breathing allows the organic integration between therapist and client. From this connection and intuitive listening the mind loses prominence to make room for our essence. In this space you connect with your heart.
Benefits of Californian Massage
The Californian Massage has a very restorative and liberating purpose, being at the same time very deep and intense. The primary objective of the Esalen massage is to get the person to disconnect from their daily life and enter into a state of great relaxation. This is achieved with a deep and careful physical work, with long, slow and very harmonious movements, with a fairly slow rhythm and with a rhythmic and constant pressure.
